New DRT Website Fits New DRT

Amid remote work, our wardrobes are languishing. Meanwhile, DRT has new duds: a completely reimagined and redesigned website.

Vice President of Corporate Operations, Kevin Augustine, led the website effort. He says, “We always tell our customers to ask why, to explore ‘why are we doing this in this way?” DRT leaders turned this same question on the company itself, devoting time and creativity to distill and distinguish DRT’s messaging.

The primary objective of the website work was to distinguish DRT amid a sea of staid contractor websites. Relaying the company’s emerging vision for itself and its customers, the new incarnation features:

  • Visibility of people: the collaborative, diverse nature of DRT and its most important differentiator, our talented staff
  • Clear and concise categories of work, increased focus on technological solutions
  • Ease of mobile use
  • Storytelling that exudes confidence: subtle animation, brief copy, all conveying savvy, forward advancement
  • Targeted sections to reach two recruiting audiences, both experienced hires and those just joining the workforce.

“These are distinct personas and audiences and so, we speak to each differently,” Augustine relays.

We invite you to check it out—and share it on your social media.

Q. So you’re working on a task order at the FDA. They have extra funds in the budget and inquire if DRT has experience with data visualization and Excel analytics, known as Power BI (Business Intelligence). DRT responds, “Absolutely, we can help you.” What happens next?

A. Well, I had no experience with Power BI whatsoever. The stakeholder had a ton of questions, so I did a bunch of research to understand the program’s capabilities. I spent 15 to 20 hours training on it. And then another 20 hours developing a demo and building the visuals to present the data.

Q. You’re essentially a brand new DRTer. But in short order, you became an expert? In their kudos, the customer said you nailed it, giving them exactly what they wanted.

A: I have a coding background but Power BI was not like anything I had done before. It’s a very user-friendly program so it is pretty easy to pickup even if you only have experience with Excel. We worked with the FDA’s Unified Registration and Listing System (FURLS) data, creating a very visual tool to show the number of applications and certificates going through the system.

Q. What did this—and your seven-month tenure at DRT—teach you?

A. This was a great experience, getting to create and tailor a demo to the customer’s needs. I am learning to work with the customer, to be more confident. How to run meetings. How to jump in when opportunities like this present themselves. I love that I have cool stuff to do—to help the FDA create interesting reports and newsletters.

Q. What was it like to move to a new city and take a new job in the midst of the shutdown?

A. It’s been a little strange. From June forward, my roommate was the only person I saw. We met on a Facebook group and moved in together. It is really nice that I have had someone to talk to. When it was warm in D.C., we would go and sit outside and eat at restaurants. But most everything has been closed so we have yet to see very much of the Capital. I did meet three of my co-workers over lunch in September, that was the first time.

Q. What’s been the biggest help in this professional transition?

A. Everyone has been great, especially answering inconsequential questions. Working virtually, it’s a bigger deal now to ask someone, “How do I put in for PTO?” I’ve appreciated it so much, that my team so readily offers help.

Could improved data visualization help your customer, as proved true in the spotlight above

DRT Senior Associate Allen Dewberry is an expert, having used Power BI extensively in his work at the FDA. He explains, “Many of our customers are still using spreadsheets and could benefit from seeing their data visually.”

While Tori Guy (above) used a Desktop version of Power BI with Excel spreadsheets, Dewberry runs data from a server, connecting directly to the FDA Citrix network. This offers a host of advantages, including the ability to run reports hourly, daily, weekly. etc. “Working directly with the database to support our clients, we gain a much better understanding of the data
