DRT Strategies Software Engineer Wins NIH Challenge at AWS Hackathon for Good

DRT’s Phani Maddhi leads team to create the winning cloud computing innovation for National Institutes of Health (NIH)’s challenge in Amazon Web Services’ (AWS) second annual Hackathon for Good at the AWS Public Sector Summit in Washington, D.C.

Arlington, VA – July 1, 2019 – DRT Strategies, Inc. (DRT), a leading management and technology firm, announced today that DRT software engineer, Phani Maddhi, led a team of four other engineers to create the winning cloud computing innovation for National Institutes of Health (NIH)’s challenge in Amazon Web Services’ (AWS) second annual Hackathon for Good at the AWS Public Sector Summit in Washington, D.C.

Specifically, NIH challenged more than 125 software developers to leverage AWS services to create a web interface that can import, identify, segment, and analyze images of cell nuclei, while visualizing the data in an interactive way.  In short, could software engineers create a solution in just ten hours, that would accelerate the time it takes for scientists to sift through scores of visual data to find a potential health remedy that could improve lives?

Mr. Maddhi and his team demonstrated that the answer is, “yes.”  A key facet of their solution is the use of serverless architecture and other related AWS services to optimize scalability and to automate image processing, storage, and conversion of large scientific images.  As such, Mr. Maddhi’s solution empowers researchers to upload large, detailed images of cells with ease and then study and assess them in a browser.

“Special congratulations go to Phani for his commitment, technical prowess, hard thinking, and perseverance.”

Mike Bowers, COO at DRT Strategies.

“To win the AWS Public Sector Hack-a-thon is most impressive and reflective of the DRT solutions he creates for his clients every day.”

About AWS Hack-a-thon for Good

Amazon Web Services (AWS) invited hackers, creators, innovators, and coders to solve problems, create new tools, and push the boundaries with challenges from our public sector in government, non-profit and education. Over the course of 10 hours, hackers collaborated in teams to solve technological challenges using AWS technology and solutions. Teams competed against each other, demoed their ideas, and AWS’ esteemed judges decided the winner of the overall competition.  Hackers chose to solve one of four AWS customer challenges from the NIH, American Red Cross, USA for UN Refugee Agency, or the Virginia Cyber Range.
